In 2006, the Manitoba Gaming Control Commission (MGCC), Addictions Foundation of Manitoba and Manitoba Lotteries partnered to fund the Manitoba Longitudinal Study of Young Adults (MLSYA). The MLSYA followed a longitudinal sample of 679 Manitobans between the ages of 18 and 20 over a five year period from 2007 to 2011 to develop a stronger understanding of the protective factors that promote responsible gambling and the risk factors that increase the likelihood of experiencing gambling-related harm.
Although the MLSYA was designed as a gambling study, the dataset contains a wealth of instruments that could be used to examine many issues affecting young adults in Manitoba, and the partners are pleased to be making this valuable longitudinal dataset available to external researchers.
On April 1, 2012, the MGCC will begin accepting applications on behalf of the project partners for the MLSYA Data Access Program. Researchers may apply to use the dataset for their own research studies, which do not necessarily need to be related to gambling. In order to promote Manitoba-based research, only researchers affiliated with Manitoba organizations or post-secondary institutions may apply to access the dataset during the 2012/13 fiscal year. The MGCC’s Research Department has coordinated the MLSYA on behalf of the project partners. The MGCC is pleased to be a leader in gambling research by participating in major collaborative research initiatives, like the MLSYA, that inform policy and public interest activities and build research capacity in Manitoba.
